I’ve downloaded Windows Meida 10 and have made sure that the .avi files were checked when it asked what kind of files I wanted to view. However, it keeps playing the audio only. What else can I do to play an .avi file? Thanks.
You’re probably missing the video codec for it. To find out which video codec you need, run one of the tools listed on this page and find out what the fourcc is.
Anonymous, thank you so very much. That worked beautifully and now I can play all of the files. (And it was a fast fix, too.) Much appreciated.

No, you can’t play .avi files with QuickTime. You can use Media Player Classic or VLC/VideoLan to play these files. They’re your best options.
whenever I try to play mine on DivX, it just says that an error was created and it shuts down. I don’t know, but the file may be corrupted or something..
Ive read and payed attention to the comments on this page but i am still unable to play .avi with my media player, is there a place on the entire web where i can just download the video codec for it or find the fourcc?
