Explorer acting up when I try to open burned disks

whenever I try to open a data DVD with movies, such as in divX, avi, or some other non vob format explorer freezes and doesn’t let me open it. Any tips?

oh, and also - I’m running winXP on a pentium3 processor

Did you just add any type of dvd burning software? Nero etc.? There is an issue with sp2 that will casuse that problem. The aspi layer in windows is
1. old
2. flaky

You could try going to adptecs site and dl the files for aspi. Try check aspi first, it’ll tell you if you have an aspi layer installed and what version, second, you could try to install using forceaspi. (but use dump first so you can reset if needed)
Also, Nero has a special aspi layer that needs to placed in the nero 'core' dir.

Anything else could cause conflicts, ie; anydvd, or dvdidle, etc.

Check that and see what happens.
I had to clean out nero 7 comjpletely, use their cleaning apps, then checked aspi, loaded the latest aspil layer, reinstalled nero and updated their aspi as well. All works now.

The computer I am trying to open the burned disc on has no CD/DVD burning soft installed. It’s my step-sister’s laptop and I just formatted the HD and installed an almost completely bare XP system. The only non-XP package soft installed is MS Office, Adoby and some some wireless networking prog.

I also checked, and the DVD drive was set to region 1 by some nincompoop, could that be the problem?

Amazing story topcat.Upper lower filters and aspi problem was fixed long time ago and sp2 was not install by this guy. Anyway Vasiliy came back with more info about your laptop and what you have on it I mean hardware: dvd burner or only dvd rom. If you install xp try to update to sp2 and is going to fix a lot of problems.Also try a blank dvd on whatever drive you have and see if is going to find your blank dvd or at least to see any message about it.Also you can try a blank cd and see what’s going on.If you have a burner installed is good to find a burning software try any trial if you don’t have one,is going to work with your drive and give you an updated generic driver for.So try something and give us a sign.Go to vso website and download the inspector is a freeware and install it.After that load a burnt or a original dvd and open the inspector and click scan. http://www.vso-software.fr/download.php
