can't play AVIs

I’ve got all the necessary codecs required to play installed on my system, I’ve got xvid, and I’ve got divx, but WMP won’t play them. I can use VLC, but stupid WMP won’t play them. Doesn’t matter the codec, if it’s AVI, WMP won’t play it. VLC will, WMP won’t.
