avi file's video is lagging behind audio after conversion from .vob format

i recorded something on a videocam and it is in .vob format, which could not be imported into windows movie maker.

so, i converted it into .avi format, using wmv1 video codec and mp3 audio codec.

it worked in windows movie maker but the video is lagging behind the audio.

is the problem behind this the codecs that i am using in avi format?

are there any codecs that i should use to avoid this lagging problem but still acceptable in windows movie maker?

if so, what is the converter programme that i can download and use to solve this problem?
