avi divx in mediaplayer

I can´t play avi files divx encoded in mediaplayer, it gives an error message saying the file format is not supported. I checked the file with gspot and it says all codecs needed are installed and that the file is OK but when I try to render it says directshow can’t render the file.
If I play the file in The Player from divx it works fine.
I can’t understand what’s wrong, any help would be most welcomed.
