
FOURCC (four character code) is a code that identifies the video codec a media file was encoded with. Technically it is simply 4 bytes (or 32 bits) in the header area of a media file - but because character codes from the ASCII table is used, it is a human-readable code.

If you have a Quicktime file (MOV, QT) or RealPlayer file (RM, RMVB) then in almost all cases all that you will need is to simply download the players in order to playback your file. For codecs specifically for Quicktime (or RealPlayer) that are not bundled with the player you should still use the table on this page however.
