When downloading a video from our Canon Elph 2 files show up for each video. Both files have the same name but different extensions, e.g:
123_456.avi
123_456.thm

If you just want to see the clip open the avi in windows media player (or another prefered player)and feel free to delete the thm to avoid future confusion.

What if I accidentally deleted the .avi file and it is not in my recycle bin? Is there any way to extract the .avi from the .thm? reply

You can not play .thm Files. They are not Video.
You are trying to play the wrong files.
You want to play the files that start with
MOV.... reply

Forget about the thm file. You can delete it, it has no influence on the video once it’s on your computer.
Converting mpeg1 files is tricky. You can convert them in quicktime pro to whatever format you want, However, you will lose the sound. You could try with Sorenson, though so far I have been unsuccessfull, but that could just be because i might have a dodgy version.
Anyway, the only way i’ve foud so far is to use Audio hijack to record the sound and then converted it using Quicktime pro and adding the sound track manually. There was also a way though i movie, but the video quality was terrible once that was done.
I hope this helped, good luck! reply

Hello everybody.

Is there a programme that can convert .THM files to .AVI files? After I downloaded my videos from my camera, it did not split into .AVI files and .THM files like the others. It just got into .THM files. Anyone that can help please do. Thanks in advance!

I recorded video clips using my Sony Cybershot digital camera, which unfortunately had .thm as the video file type default. (I eventually changed that!)

2 Questions: Is there a a video player that actually PLAYS .thm files? Better yet, is there a program to convert these files to .mpeg or some other common video file type? reply

Thanks for the clarification of what a .thm file is. However, my Sony camera’s videoclips are in .mpg format, and when I click on them, Quicktime opens and plays the picture, but with no sound. How do I get the sound to play??? reply

This thread is full of ****ing idiots.

NO, YOU CAN’T CONVERT .THM TO .AVI OR .MPG!!!

.THM IS JUST A SMALL PICTURE OF THE FIRST FRAME OF THE VIDEO!!!

IF YOU DELETED .AVI FILE AND WANT TO PLAY BACK .THM YOU ARE A MORON!!! reply

The reply that Ethel posted was very helpful. I wasn’t able to view the thm. files, but she was right in that, there were duplicate files that I was able to view with the windows media player. The video was taken with Canon A540 6.0 pixels. Thanks Ethel. reply
