I am running WMP version 7 on my windows 98 machine and it plays my .MOV movies fine. My new XP laptop has WMP version 9 and it will only play the sound and not the movie. Why? reply

.MOV is a Macintosh Quicktime movie format. You should be able to view your .MOV movies just fine in QuickTime. reply

Use Quicktime Alternative to play it:

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm

No need to install the regular Quicktime player.

Are you sure your Windows Media Player 7 plays .MOV? o_0 I don’t think WMP7 plays .MOV... reply

I was searching the net to see what video software program plays .MOV file and so I happened upon this site. I thought I’d just share my experience. I have Windows Media Player 9.0 and it will play my .MOV file, however before it plays it there’s a pop-up window that says: The selected file has an extension that is not recognized by Windows Media Player, but the Player will be able to play it. Because the extension is unknown by the Player, you should be sure that the file comes from a trustworthy source.

Then in the same window it ask: Do you want the Player to play the file?

You have the option to click on a YES or NO button.

I’d like to append that Windows Media Player can play QuickTime (.mov) files only if they use a cross-platform codec (a codec that can be embedded in either .mov or .avi files). The most common example is Cinepak. reply

VLC on GNU/Linux, Solaris, and Microsoft Windows has playback control support via libcdio and libvcdinfo. On other platforms, SVCD support varies depending on the availability of these libraries. (Volunteers for adding support are always welcome.). Handling still frames (often used in menus) and switching between different video formats is problematic.
VLC for GNU/Linux supports two kinds of MPEG-2 encoding cards: Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-250/350 and Visiontech Kfir.

Windows DMO codecs can be used by VLC on 32-bit x86 platforms and allow WMV-3/WMA-3 decoding. This feature is untested on Intel-based Macs.
VLC’s 0.9.0 release will introduce support for RV30 and RV40 based upon the additions to the FFmpeg-library by one their Google Summer of Code 2007 projects.
Full color for YUV-type chromas is not handled, only the gray-scale value. Subtitle transparency is not fully supported for all chromas. Some chromas are not handled at all.
