Hi
I have a problem with playing .mp4 file. I downloaded Nero digital that comes with showtime(30 day trial) and it worked with windows media. After the trial period I could no longer play this movie file. I have tried all the players including winamp and quicktime and it doesn’t work.
The only exception here would be vlc media in which the audio is fine but the video is shaky/distorted.
Will be glad if someone could help me solve this problem.

Hi!
1. Thanks to everybody for all the information about mp4-codecs and players. Ypou guys were extremly helpful!
2. Now to the *.mp4a-problems: this is only an audio-format! No wonder you can’t see any video - there is none!!!
There are 3 kinds of mp4-files:
- mp4: regular mp4-files (audio + video)
- mp4a/m4a: only audio files
- mp4v/m4v: only video files
Hope this answers your questions!
3ivx will allow you to play mp4 on windows media player but like it was said above only for 30 days trial.
VLC player rulz !!
but if u hv any more probs burn the file onto a cd and throw it at Philips DVP642 DVD player, it plays anything u hv on cd/dvd’s !!
When you change the file type extensions, does it have to be .mov that you change it to? Or can you change it to any file type(ie: can I change it to .mpg or .mpeg)?
i used vlc, media player classic and qiuck time 7 , about 15 codecs and plugins and allota shit but i still get errors and i cant play tha damn ting
Hey
I tried all the things in this tread and found out that VLC plays my .mp4 file. But I have a problem. When I skip a few minutes of the movie the image freezes and doesn’t skip to the right time, audio still works and then VLC crashes...
Can anyone help me out with this problem?
Best Regards Unkle
I have the same problem with an MP4 file. VLC will not play it, will only give audio, even though it has both.
I’ve tried renaming to mov also, there is something going on nobody here has figured out yet.
My feeling is there is a recent file format not supported by any of the players mentions so far (or possibly a corrupted/invalid header?)
Would appreciate if anyone has any ideas, and will report back if I solve it.
