".CDA Files
.CDA files are not, strictly speaking, a file at all. Taken more accurately they resemble Microsoft’s shortcut files in that they point to information rather than containing it themselves. In the case of a shortcut, this means a pointer to a file somewhere on your computer, a .CDA file serves the same purpose for an audio CD and simply points to the track and sector on a disc where a song begins.

When you browse an audio CD using Windows, you’ll notice that it appears to contain a directory of .CDA files and double-clicking on any given file will play the relevant track. Copy the file to your hard disc and then remove the CD, however, and it’s a different story. At best, the player will report that the relevant CD is not present; at worst it will play from the same point on whatever CD happens to be in the drive at the time."

you can use windows media player to rip the songs, though. if you use WMA lossless, it should sound exactly like the original CD, but it will take a lot of hard drive space. reply

I was working on a pc that had the cd-rom just installed and couldn’t get it to play a cd on Windows Media Player. It would just show the icon and track number with the .cda extention and WMP would just give an error message. What I think I did was from XP I opened My Computer, right clicked the CD Drive, left clicked Properties, left clicked the Autoplay tab, opened the top drop down window, left clicked Music CD from the list and that seemed to allow WMP to play the CD, clicked the check box Select An Action and opened WMP from there or you can click open the CD Drive and from that window click the track icons. Then to save I clicked the arrows in WMP upper left corner so I could see the top tool bar with File, Edit etc, left clicked File, selected Save As and using the top drop down window chose where to put it. Might have missed a step here but I hope this is helpful. reply

Another option I found for audio (perhaps applicable to video) is instead of relying on the autoplay, open the program you want to play it with first (windows media player, etc), then after inserting the disk cancel whatever window opens in responce to it, then go back to the player program you opened, click file, click open, and then hunt for the CD or DVD drive it’s in and open it that way. FYI I have an external DVD player and sometimes I forget to turn it on or even have to turn it off and then on again for the computer to recognize it. -Michael reply

After posting here and seeing that people were taking the subject out of context while this post started with cda file format for video, people started to post about audio files with the same extension and I became disgusted and went off on my own. I managed to play cda video files by using DVD Decryptor which rips the video files into vob files and these files can then be viewed on your PC. reply
