AVI Problems - Codec? Invalid?

Hey folks,

I downloaded a movie that had .AVI as the extension. It plays audio but not video.

I checked the properties of the file and all I can see is that the type of file is listed as “Video Clip”

GSPOT does not recognize this as a valid AVI file.

Any help would be appreciated. This file is almost 700meg and I’m dying to see it!

except i cant see anything or hear andything and i am dying to see my download! and it says its .avi but gspot dont understand it and it wont play

Exact same problem here as well.... have tried everything and cant understand why its not working. avi file that wmp 10 will not play, it says that i am missing one or more codecs? any help would be appreciated

I just got a new laptop, downloaded 3 movies from limewire, 1 I heard sound but no video, 2 nothing but an error message indicating the file format was not supported by my player, i got wmp10 with the latest codecs. Anyone have any ideas? i read up on google that we need to types of codecs to play *.avi ext. files.

Could it be a DivX? DivX files usually have .avi extensions but you need the DivX codec and/or the DivX player. Kinda jip if you ask me.
Also you may want to try simply changing the file extension to .mpg or .mpeg and see if windows media player will open it.

I went over to the local tech shop today and the tech there gave me some tips. He downloaded Gspot codec information appliance and divfix to my laptop. Then dragged one of the *.avi files to the Gspot codec information appliance app and this app is basically a diagnostic tool. It tells you exactly what is wrong with the file you download, (in my case a bad header) in which case you then drag the file over to the divfix.exe app and see if the *.avi file is fixable. If it is then you got a movie else you got a waste of space. So basically out of the three movies I downloaded only one was able to be fixed by the Gspot app and later viewed in wmp, the others were non fixable. Anyhow that’s what i found out. The tech downloaded these files to my laptop however i’m pretty sure you can retrieve these files off the web. Look for Gspot codec information appliance and divfix on google or something. Hope that helps!

ya well guys it seems everybody has this problem cause im trying to figure it out right now... but is there no one that knows the answer i mean this is the internet i thought nerds hungout all day waiting for ppl like us to ask questions...

You just need to download a divx player and it will install the right codecs for your .avi files and you can play them in wmp or winamp or whatever you wish. Here is a link to a free divx player:

You can also try playing the file with VirtualDub. It is a free video editing program that is a little more robust than WMP, and can sometimes still play some slightly damaged AVI files. It wouldn’t fix the problem if you just don’t have the right CODEC installed though... Then try DivX or XviD, that usually does it...

Download VLC media player, it will play anything. avi, wav, mpeg, divx, xvid, ac3 code.

downloaded movies from limewire,kazaa and thers nothing there except www.cleavoutclub.ub.com. weres my movies
