avi file work on real player but can't see anything

I have an avi file that I can use with Real Player or windows player but I just see a visualization, there is no sound either seeing the videoclip.
how can i Tell which codec do I need?
I did try DIvx but it did not help

Use VLC Media Player to play the files - it is among the best players for any kind of video files.
