Avi file format not recognized

i downloaded a movie with .avi extension
iv tried running it in multiple video players.
Gspot says its not an avi file
iv even tried converting it into different types but nothing works.
any help?

hey guys thanks alot.. HJSplit helped me i was searching for the solution of avi files eg: avi.001, avi.002 etc
