Hi! i was making a video using my webcam and saved it (i thought as a microsoft avi file) however when it has saved the file and appears on my desktop it has no icon of any sort of program and when i try to open it asks what program to use to open it. I can open the file with various programs however there is no extension at all.. it just says that it is a 'file' and i need it to be an avi file or mpeg file.. can anyone tell me how to do this? thanks!

this program solv my problem thank you very much!
thanks chess83 your method works!
Yep! Same problem, FileNameXviD-DVBRip.avi would not show video in MS Media Player, only played the sound track.
Downloaded VLC media player and installed. Video and audio both play great!
Thanks to all for the many replies to the original post.
A1TopGun,
You had a codec issue, MS media Plaey didn’t have the codec required to play the media file.
Next time, use Gspot or another program to find the needed codec.
asakaseto, 002 is for .rar files, so, get winrar or 7 zip to extract the contents.
woahconfused,
Well, first off open my documents -> tools -> Folder options -> uncheck hide known file types.
Reply with the file type.
If it doesn’t have one, run it through gspot and tell us the codec.
It may have accidentally been renamed without the file type added on.
OK, I downloaded a video file. It was an .avi, and it looked reasonable (file size, name, etc).
I tried to open in Windows Media Player, but it said it couldn’t recognize it. So I assumed I was missing a codec. I then downloaded GSpot, and loaded the file. It said the format wasn’t a recognized avi, and no codec information was available at all.
I assumed that the file was renamed, and it was an mpg, or mov, or something else. But after changing the extension numerous times, I got nowhere.
So how do I determine what file it really is? Is it an avi, with an unrecognized codec?
Has anyone else had this problem?
Try opening the file in VLC player.

If it works, you can view the codec used to decode it, and if you’d like post back with the informaiton and I can assist in finding the necessary codec/filter.
The reason for this is because unlike WMP VLC utilizes internal codecs only, thus ruling out a codec issue.
Hey... Chess83,
Your solution worked like hell. Thanks a lot man...
guys..
this might help..i was in total ruined when i download few movies that come in a split 001 002 files..when i try to open it with vlc(which plays almost all codec)..still it’s not working..thanx to tejisgreat!
download the hj split..

join the files..(just paste the 001 files at the input..and if the other file is in the same path..it will usually automatically detected)..
and enjoy your movie..simple dude!
I had that problem with 8 gb of avi’s. They simply stopped working :|. Today I downloaded HEX Workshop and all of the 'corrupted' avi’s had 0000 (zero-s) in the string or bytes or what you call them... I even opened an avi in Notepad and it showed only EMPTY SPACES (lots of 'em)..Strangely, the avi sizes were the same ~100 MB...Deleted them all.
awl you idiots......can any one tell me this step by step.....properly
You guys really got sidetracked here. The problem is that an “avi” file isn’t recognized as an “avi” file when trying to play or fix. I have the same problem, for the second time around. I tried DivFix, and Divx Repair with no luck. Every time I try to play in a different media player, it freezes it (except with VLC player).
I have loaded my videos (With pictures) on my computer...from my dig.camera Then burning them on a DVD+R to give to friends. One said they tried to read it on their PC and it said corrupt. I Have Vista Home Basic (SUCKS!) Where does the AVI come from? I’m confussed does it come from my camara? I can put the DVD+R in my PC and it works fine even mixed with pictures and videos??? I would love to be able to watch my videos on my DVD player but I reading up that won’t happen with Vista Home Basic...So I would be happy if I could share the videos from my camera with friends! Ya know?
HJsplit never really worked for me. Did some searching and came across this: http://www.001filejoinerandspliterr.com . Hope this helps. It’s nice b/c it associates itself w/ the .001 file format so when I download a set of files (like movie.wmv.001, movie.wmv.002, etc), I just double click the .001 file and it’s all done. fast and pretty too. have fun!
ooops, sorry guys, it’s actually: http://www.001filejoinerandspliter.com
WinRAR & HJSplit never really worked for me. Did some searching and came across this: http://www.001filejoinerandspliter.com . Hope this helps. I hav a similar problem as u guys cept:
I hav downloaded 9 IESP files then split and joined them using HJsplit. When i play using VLC, it only plays so much (bout 16 mins out of 2+hours) then closes. cliking play again gives me that 'Avi file broken...' message. choosing repair has no effect. Not sure if relevant but, the split files in the window normally hav the document image with the icon of whatever program u r using to play it. here, it’s jus a blank document. The solutions posted so far hav not worked for me. what can i do?
