What a messy forum thread! There are obviously 2 different types of problems mixed up in there without anybody acknowledging it and with tempers going bad!
The first type of problem is with a working WMM or WLMM but people not understanding the concept of making and saving a 'project' - the commands to make a movie out of one or more files by trimming, adding effects, titles, captions, etc... and the concept of generating the movie itself. So when these people are told explicitly how to generate the movie their problem is solved.
Then some people joined the thread because their Movie Maker was not working but instead of saying they have a different problem (and probably they should have posted somewhere else) they get irritated when someone repeats the basics once more: they obviously know how to do that but Movie Maker crashes when they do. All my sympathy to those people because the problem is more difficult to sort out and might require going back to a restore point (see 'System Restore') or repairing the Windows Live or Movie Maker installation. And these solutions might not work either :-(.
For the first set of people I will repeat that saving the project (which takes only seconds) saves the location of the files and the commands you apply to them. This is called a project and Movie Maker can play this project by finding the files and applying your commands to them. The size of the project file will be small.
Generating a movie file is a much longer process because each frame is processed and a movie file that can be played somewhere else is created. It will take minutes for a short movie and can take hours.
Or if you’re unlucky, it may crash and you fall in the second category!
I don’t know if we’re on the same page here, but I think that most people are trying to turn a .wmv or a .wlmm (if they are trying to convert .wlmm then they are really in for some disappointment) into a .mov, .avi, or other such file types. Also, does windows movie maker update on vista or 7 (I have, as I said before, windows xp which is most unfortunate).
By the way, Visit www.eggplantanimtion.com for games, videos, and other fun stuff
Note: (there is no about page for me (yet) but I shall soon get one.
If your woking on Vista, go to File>Publish Movie> (Compress if your going to be putting it on youtube) and w/e you do DO NOT set the DV format, use something with “Windows” in the name. I used Windows player high def.
