I need 2 know how to get a program 4 mac that will copy certain scenes from a DVD or VOB file and convert it to a format supported by Quicktime, thus supported by iMove, so i can re- edit or take certain scenes out before i give a copy 2 any1 (family movies need to erase embarrasing scenes). reply

I can’t thank you enough, syncm. I’ve been looking for a vob-to-avi converter for days now and haven’t been able to find anything that worked. I was just about ready to give up hope when I stumbled upon this page. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! reply

Alive DVD Ripper can do this.

OSX users:
download the following programs and have FinalCutPro (and if possible DVDStudioPro) installed:
OSEx 0.01 10a1
bbDEMUX
mAC3Dec

1. insert a DVD and run OSEx. OSEx should read the DVD and list the tracks available for conversion. Selecting the track with the longest running time will usually acquire the meat and potatoes of what you’re decoding. Select a destination and hit save. This will create a new VOB file on your hard disk, one that has been de-crypted from copy protection. When done eject the DVD.

2. Quit OSEx and drag the new VOB file to bbDEMUX. bbDEMUX now demuxes the VOB into its component MPEG-2 video and AC3 audio streams. Note: this program demuxes VOB into ALL its component streams, so you’ll be left with more than you need, including likely a 5.1 AC3 version in addition to the stereo, possibly a second language AC3, and a bunch of other large files you won’t need. When done, select the MPEG-2 video and the first of the AC3 files and discard the rest of the files created; they won’t be needed.

3. If simply copying to another DVD at this point, chances are good you can import the two files right into DVDStudioPro and burn DVDs. Look out for content length though, many DVDs are dual-layer and thus can hold 9.4GB of data, while the DVD burner you’ll likely be using is only single-layer and can only burn 4.7GB at a time. You might have to split your content into two separate burns. Creative intermission.

4. If you’re encoding to Web or other format from this point, you’ll still need to decode the AC3 audio to AIFF stereo. Drag the AC3 file to mAC3dec and your file will be decoded to AIFF. Depending on the nature of the AC3 file, this process may take some time. Be sure to choose 48kHz 16bit stereo.

5. At this point you should have a stereo AIFF pair of audio files and a matching MPEG-2 video file. Load these into FinalCutPro, line them up, and providing you’ve got the right Quicktime Pro codecs installed in your system, you can bounce these now to any movie format you want, including AVI. reply

My M2V will not open with fcp... it was created by FCP, but is not an acceptible format for fcp projects. So how do i get my M2V file into FCP

The link above is designed for Win95/98/ME/2000/NT/XP/2003, not Mac and FCP. reply

Did you find a solution for converting VOB files to editable iMovie files? If so, did the picture quality suffer when the files were decoded? reply

DiVA will convert .VOB files into .MOV files which can be edited in iMovie.

However, I’m having trouble finding something that will convert my .VOB files into something I can edit in Final Cut Pro (.avi, preferably). I can’t find any program available for my Mac. It’s really frustrating. reply

if you followed my last post to the letter you should be happily burning by now.

to share them, use DivX converter to make .avi files, then share them using limewire.

if you have to ask, you probably shouldnt know.

I ran into a hitch:
As well as converting the “VIDEO_TS.VOB” files in my VIDEO_TS FOLDER, there are also “VIDEO_TS.BUP” and “VIDEO_TS.IFO” files... Diva doesn’t recognize them/won’t open them. Any suggestions on how to access all the video & audio files so that iMovie 5 can work with them. (I’m running OS 10.4.5)? Thanks. reply

for mac people...

Handbreak is a good program... you can get it Versiontracker.com. It was easier to use than DiVA, ffmegx, or cleaner6. I used the conversion to mp4 but then you can see it in quicktime and export it as an .mov file from there. the only thing is that it takes forever!!! reply
