NAL, please see above — sunplus transcoding tool ver 0.4 (dated 4/28/05) is located at http://www.knndigital.com/download/k911/knn_rm_asf.zip (the folder the setup file is in is named pmp0428)

note that it converts to asf, not to avi

To get rid of distortion try changing the audio stream from 16k to 8k. might work.

By the way, I use Xilisoft DVD Ripper Platinum 4.0.34 to rip my DVDs, then convert them by PMP0428 Transcoder in Good video and 8K audio sample rate. It allows me to store 2 movies (2 hours each on avarage) in my 1GB SD card. Suits me well! You should try it too! If anybody knows a way to make them smaller retaining the quality, please share it with us!
Thanks.

Pitmanj i know a 2gb sd card works don’t know if 4gb will.
A vob file is whats on a dvd decriptor and dvd
ripper just ripps they do not convert, so if you have a 4gb
dvd it ripps a 4gb dvd, then you convert two different
processes.

pitmanj — generally speaking, an sd card for use in pmp is fat(16) format, with a 2gb volume (disk size) limit (google “file allocation table” if you want more technical details)

IF you were to format the sd to fat32, then you could get over the 2gb vol limit, but the pmp wouldn’t recognize the card any more

so theoretically, 4gb card wouldn’t work — I can’t prove it because I don’t have a 4gb card at this time

general comment on quality of conversion (compression)

pmp ver 0.4 will convert a 1gb vob file to about 0.12gb asf file at normal (500) video and 16k audio

ver 0.5’s output file is about 0.15gb

and the newest ver 0.9’s output is about 0.18gb — bigger file and much more pixelated (boxy/blocky) video

I thought newer software versions and larger files were supposed to be better, not worse — I am sticking with ver 0.4

I don’t know exactly which player you have, but it always comes down to the same thing on a battery question.

If you can get it open without destroying it, the battery(s) are replaceable. Where I live at, we have a store called Battery’s Plus, and I’ve had them replace the battery packs in phones and even my rechargable razor. They just unsoldered the old one and soldered the new pack in. They even make custom battery packs if they don’t have the one you need in stock.

If it can be gotten at, the battery pack can be replaced. But if yours is a standard rechargable type, the battery may cost as much as the player itself did, so that is something to consider.
