.mpg to .mov on the mac

I was just wondering if anyone knows how to convert .mpg files to .mov files on a Mac. I’ve found some programs that do it on a PC, but I’m not having any luck figuring out how to do it on a Mac. Thanks! (I’m trying to open a .mpg clip in iMovie and it won’t let me. I think I need to convert it to a .mov (or some other file type) first.)
Thanks for any help!

anonymousRegularQuickTime Pro would probably be the way to go, but I don’t know if audio conversion for mpeg-1 works on the mac.
P.S: From the way you phrased the question, I conjectured you just want to play the file.
Have you tried QuickTime Player or VideoLan (http://www.videolan.org)?
You can also give mplayer for mac os a try. It’ll play just about any format. (http://mplayerosx.sourceforge.net) (Why is that relevant, you ask? On file sharing networks people have a nasty habit of renaming avi’s and windows media files into mpg. This is not a problem for Windows Media Player (on PC’s) as it doesn’t go by extension to play a file, but it can be for other programs and operating systems, which may not support avi or windows media natively for example.)

Thanks for your quick reply, I really appreciate it!
I do need audio conversion... it’s a clip of me singing, so the audio is really the most important part of the clip. I’m actually not having any trouble getting the file to play on my computer, what I want to do is download it into iMovie so I can cut the end of the clip off and then reduce the file size. I’d like to put it on my website, but right now it is such a huge file it takes way too much time to download. So, I basically need a way to edit it, and I know how to do that in iMovie, but it won’t let me import a .mpg. There’s my conundrum...
Thanks!

anonymousRegulari googled some and found this
http://www.alfanet.it/squared5/mpegstreamclip.html
mpegstreamclip (freeware) should do the trick. you can convert the mpeg-1 either to digital video or quicktime for editing in imovie.
P.S: ignore my quicktime pro comment earlier. the board gets mostly pc-related questions and i know relatively little about macs (which btw are fine machines - if they had mac os x running on pc hardware i’d buy it in a heartbeat)

goto http://www.media-convert.com
select your input file (and the format if not automatically detected)
