Here is something to try for those who happen to have lots of free time:

1) Find a video decompiler program, which will rip a video down to its frames. Each frame is usually in JPEG format (could be bitmap, too), which is the preferred format.
2) Then use one of the programs mentioned earlier on each and every jpeg file having the mosaic in. The best bet would be the updated FLmask. Gmask would work, too. In fact, there was another whose name sounded like ero kero or something. All these programs should be still available from simtel net.
I am not very sure, but FLmask could be (or at least used to be) configured to run in batch mode, meaning once you establish your parameters, you can select multiple (hundreds of) jpeg files and start unmasking.

3) Now, it’s time recompile the whole video from the un-masked (mosaic-less) frames or jpeg files.

It is easier said than done. I like idea of writing one’s own program to unmask the videos; it’s tempting, yet I am not pervert enough to undertake such a task.

Johnnysalsa you learned the lesson. Next time, don’t buy anything without knowing well it’s contents, especially when you are purchasing in big quantities. By law, if the movie is shot in Japan, it’s required to censor the male/female genital area. Don’t worry, just keep watching your movies several more times and you will get use to it.

I bought an Olympia DV-9900 mentioned above, and it is worth every penny. Took me 15 minutes of experimenting because I could not read the Japanese instructions. After that, it worked on 3 different DVD players and 2 differnt TVs with absolutely no problem.

I can now enjoy my large collection of Japanese DVDs without the mosaic censorship.

A guy just sold one on EBay for $149 + $25 for shipping. I did not pay that much, but it would have been worth it, if I had.

The PR-Tracker does not specificaly tell somone how to demask a mosaic. Can any one say how?

I agree with you 100%(i.e. about the stated recommendations and quality comparisons - everything!). Your comment was posted way back in 2005 and I wonder whether there have been any updates (like the one on the bilingual matter you suggested) so far.

Even I tried to purchase the DV-9900DX, though all the search results led to sites with menus entirely written in Japanese :-( ... it took
me various hours to peruse the 100’s of links provided. Why can’t at least some of these dealers offer the respective shopping facilities in English (like other Asian companies, who offer AV material, do)? A few of these web-suppliers display an e-mail contact, and I wrote to all of them - however, no reply came in yet.
Is it that the device in question was solely intended for their local customers, or what?

Sadly, the Canadian E-Bay had sold the stock
available at their end. In the event that you
had eventually discovered something else, I would really appreciate having your updates.

Olympia DV 9900 is on EBay right now for $24.99 + $55 shipping. That is still cheaper than buying direct from Japan.

This is about mosaic removal
You guys can try the filter they wrote at Moscow State University. It’s under MSU filters. (It’s for VirtualDub.) Look for 'logo removal'. Of course the amount of success will depend on the video sequence you have (you’ll have less or more blurring), but some of their results look good.

There is one way of increasing quality of mosaiced parts. But it decreases quality of the rest video:

If there was a way to build a mask of mosaic and then combine original video outside the mask and processed this way video inside the mask, then result could be quite good.
