But the video editing software I currently have does not recognize .mkv files. Is there any good .mkv to .avi converter on the web that is free and good to use for large files? Many thanks.

You don`t need to convert the movie with Mkv extension... simply install Matroska full pack and run it with BSPlayer... it works wink peace

Maybe you can search in google with the keywords “MKV to AVI Converter”, and you can easily find an app which can convert mkv to avi divx xvid.

P.S the reference link is:

I got better way to convert .MKV to .DIVX for a ''MAC'' user and it work also for “Windows” user also first you need quicktime then installed http://www.perian.org/ for your quicktime to play .MKV from there you play it then you go to FILE and click SAVE AS and then it should turn to a .MOV file really good quality noting is lost and it that easy and fast but IF you want it in .AVI get “Toast TITANIUM 8” for really good .DIVX quality and it burn .Divx dvd at the same time but IF you don’t want to use TOAST you can convert that .MOV in any video converter program you want to use.

1) Google this: “Magic Video Converter v8.0.2.18”
or goto http://www.magic-video-software.com/
2) either purchase or torrent
3) download and install
4) convert to any format you want in seconds

Geez folks! do ya really need all this posting for something so simple?

It’s not that simple. For example, daedalus maelstrom’s suggestion to use Magic Converter flops. I tried it and the converter simply made an empty copy of the video with an AVI extension. I may give up on the video entirely if it’s going to require a day of trying different programs,

Why not let VLC Media Player “convert” it for you. It plays lots of misc. video formats like mkv. Works great in addition to Windows Media Player.

Exotic my ass. I have been working with video files, DVD editing software and whatnot for several years now, yet I have sat here for 9 hours pulling my hair out trying to get these horrible files to burn to a damned DVD. They may have great quality as far as computer playing is concerned but your little guide is absolutely horrible. None of that information you posted works. I suggest creating a better system to convert your “Exotic” files.
