I have a home movie (so it has no copyright protection) that I put onto a DVD a while back. Then, my hard drive crashed and all the original video files were lost. Now, I want to load my DVD onto my new hard drive as an .avi file, but I have no idea how. Can anyone tell me what programs I need and how to use them?
You can try VirtualDub-MPEG-2. Just look through your DVD for the VOB file(s) and feed them into the program. Cutting should be pretty intuitive. For merging, just use open, append segment. Under Video, Compression, be SURE to pick a codec other than uncompressed, otherwise your resulting avi’s will be humongous. You may want to click on advanced too once you select a codec, so you can adjust quality settings (not all codecs are set to pristine quality by default) And to save, click file, save as avi.

Oops! I forgot to post the link to VirtualDub-MPEG-2. We host it here. You can also download it from the author’s home page here http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/stable/

Thanks, I think this program should work, though I’ll have to figure out exactly what to do with it. I did find another program (DVD-to-avi) which is real easy to use, but produces lower quality video.
