I had the same problem with my MOD files. I couldn’t import them into Sony Vegas but there’s no problem dragging them in. They all need to be edited anyways so I’m good. Hope That helps.

What worked the best for me was changing the file name from .mod to .mpg. Then downloading Any-Video-Convertor. The free ware version works better than AVS4YOU and you don’t have the annoying watermark. I still had all kinds of issues with AVS4YOU even though it converted the files fine. Any-Video-Convertor allowed me to change the files to .wmv and they played great in Windows Media Player and had no problem opening them in Movie Maker. The free ware version should allow the average user to do most of the converions they need to.
In retrospect I don’t plan on using a JVC camera again.

format factory Does an excellent job of converting mod to just about any other extention you need. (And it’s free)
AVS is an outstanding software suite that does everything it says and more, and it is very cost effective for what you get.

i dont know if this will help anybody , but i downloaded the codecs , it allowed me to play them on the media player.
i dug into my camera and transfered the mod files to a new file on my puter , then all i did was drag and drop them onto my video editer , and they opened right up , and played fine . i use vegas 7 , then after your done with the editing , render it to a mpeg2 or dvd format , then
run it thru your menue program , and done . i didnt lose any video quality that way.

good luck

The 'dragging' you mention is probably a field issue (ie, the images might be 'interlaced', as PAL and NTSC images sometimes are) - look for a control which lets you turn fields off, or merges fields, or something along those lines. Maybe that’ll sort out the issue.

OH BY THE WAY TO CHANGE EXTENTIONS ON VISTA .. GO TO CONTROL PANEL AND FOLDER OPTIONS TO VIEW AND UNCLICK HIDDEN FILE EXTENTIONS ...

BUT IT WON’T WORK IN ORDER TO GET SOUND FROM JVC EVERIO OR ANY MOD EXTENTION FILE TO MPEG OR MPG ... WHATEVER ... JVC,,, CYBERLINK,,, SUCKS ....

THAT’S YOUR SOLUTION VISTA PEOPLE .. NOT NEED TO PURCHASE EXTENTION CHANGERS ... OR DO WHAT OLD PEEPS SAID JUST GO TO DOS PROMPT AND SWITCH FROM MOD TO MPEG ... WHATEVER

IT STILL WON’T WORK ...

My camcorder also saves as .MOD files. I tried just renaming them to .mpg,.wmv after downloading from my SD card to my hard drive. They play fine in Windows Media Player 11, but when I try to import them into Movie Maker 2, I get a message that says the “proper codec is not installed on your computer to import the video”. What codec do I need & how do I get it? Anything simple?

It’s a long read, but there’s a good discussion at http://dotwhat.net/mod/2483/ which should give you all the answers
