It takes a long time depending on your PC. Last time I converted a AVI (MPEG4-DivX/XviD) to MPEG1 it encoded just about in realtime (i.e. - a 1hr 20min takes a little over 1hr 20min to re-encode to MPEG1 from an AVI).

I’m running a AMD 996Mhz with 128 MB SDram.

I no longer re-encode files (takes way too long), I just play AVIs on Xbox.

I’m running TMPGenc on a PIII-733 and with necessary quality enhancements turned on, it takes me roughly 20 hours to encode 1 hour of video.

There are some others like CCE (Cinema Craft Encoder). TMPGEnc and CCE are fairly slow because they give the best possible quality output.

You could try MainConcept. That’s suppose to be fast, but not nearly as good quality as TMPGEnc or CCE.

CCE and MainConcept are not freeware programs.

Freeware hmm. TMPGEnc’s the best freeware - quality-wise - for converting AVI to MPEG1 (standard compliant VCD file).

Another is AVI2VCstraight

AVI to MPEG1 conversion does take some time though. This is normal.

Now, although MainConcept isn’t freeware (since if you use the free version it’ll leave a watermark on the image/video), it is FAST, compared to other encoders. I would hasten to add that it’s faster because the quality isn’t as high as if you were to use TMPGEnc.
