unknown file type, cant burn

My friend gave me a movie, and to watch it he said I have to install VLC (video lan).
so on the dvd there is a 800mb bootvis trace file and the instalation package for VLC.
vlc will play it, but nero can’t even attemt to burn it. I want to watch it on the tv not pc.
is there anyway I can convert it to a file nero recognizes?

it would help out a lot more if u gave us the extension of the file.

It used to say bootvis trace file, but all of a sudden is started saying bin file and I knew what to search for and converted it to mpeg with VCD gear.
but it took 110 minutes to transcode it in nero7, when regular one takes 35minutes

btw the search led me to this same site, but another persons question, so thank you guys
