Problem burning DVD's

Having trouble buring DVD to blank DVD. I am using a DVD program and encription sofware, after reading the software I insert the blank DVD, and I get a message, please insert a blank DVD. I go to explorer and look at the properties and it has zero bits used, zero bits available. I have tried this with multiple different blank DVD’s

Do I have to format the blank DVD and if so how. Any idea’s of what I am doing wrong.

All new to this stuff.
