No sound when .avi file converted to mpg.

I’m using WinMPG to convert from .avi to mpg. Most of the time i have no probs with sound. I now have 2 new avi’s recently d’loaded and both have no sound after converted. This is happening more and more often and is beginning to shite me.
(The .avi’s have sound before conversion)
Any help out there?
