mkv files can added to ConvertX2DVD after the version 2.9 then add the prefered subs and the result is there
no conversion to avi or other formats beacause the quality
is GONE.
Also the convertx2DVD can remove all the unnesesery subs./////////agios///////

mkv files can added to Convertx2DVD after the 2.9 version also add the proper sub/srt and the result is in about 30 minutes there.
No conversion will never take place beacause the quality of matroska will gone.
The convertx2DVD can be also as an editor by ckliking out the unnessesery sub/srt.
If the size is too big for the DVD5 protocol
choose the DVD9 from the menu of Convertx if
the result is more than 4.3GB Use the DVDFab
to split the movie and keep the quality.

mkv files can be converted to the most usefull and playfull format the .avi with 1.Magic Video Converter 2.4U mp4 Video Converter 3.also with SUPER with the function of Edit.I see many files with .mkv and i ask why they are using it,no desktop players are exist, and the space in hard drive is more than other formats.all the movies I download i convert to avi and thn burn to DVD5 or DVD9 format and that’s it.Some people are trying to sell hard drives i think

Do you lose quality when you convert from mkv to avi. I mean thats the point of the mkv file, the blu ray quality. What do you need so you will not to have to convert?

You kids really need to read up on the MKV/AVI standards and why there’s a considerable push in the scene towards MKV.

Both are what’s known as 'containers'. Typically, an AVI or MKV container will contain a video stream (encoded in, say, H.264) and an audio stream (encoded in, say, AC3).

In this sense they are almost the same - that’s why you can easily convert between MKV and AVI.

MKV’s advantage is that it was created many years after AVI and can also contain things like multiple audio streams and subtitles.

If you only ever watch films in English with no subtitles, this is probably not a big deal for you. But for some people and some films it’s a bigger deal.

To get MKV to work on Windows, install the Haali Media Splitter. It’s probably easier to just install the CCCP bundle though, and it’ll be part of the install.

To get MKV to work on a Mac, install Perian.

Believe me, AVI is as old as the hills which makes it well supported, but it also has limitations.

Sir, you saved my life. i found this searching online to convert a 6 channel audio and be able to convert mkv to DVD. I humbly thank you and appreciate your sharing your knowledge. :-)

ChristianHJW wrote: The audio track in your MKV is very likely a 5.1 Dolby surround 6 channel AAC, and DVD Santa cant encode that to anything that is DVD compatible (namely 5.1 AC3).

The only way of getting this done is to

- get mkvtoolnix from http://mkvmerge.matroska.org , install it, fire up mmg.exe and load your MKV file

- disable all the audio streams (=languages) you are not interested in (i.e. remove the hooks), specify a new file name and create a new MKV (press 'start muxing'), containing only the one audio stream you are interested in

- load the special installer of Foobar2000 (http://www.foobar2000.org), enable matroska plugin, and load your MKV file in it

- convert your 5.1 AAC audio track into a high bitrate Stereo (=2.0) MP3 track (320 kbps, the maximum). To do that, right click on the MKV file, goto 'conversion settings' and specify MP3 and the bitrate as out put format. The make another right click and do a 'start conversion'

- load the MKV file in mmg.exe (mkvtoolnix) again, untick the remaining AAC audio track, and 'add' the new Stereo MP3 file. Mux a new MKV with the MP3 audio instead of the AAC audio

- retry DVDSanta

I use AlltoAVI and have had good luck with it so far. I downloaded it at sourceforge or videohelp has links to it as well.

Cheers!

The easiest way that I have found to burn .mkv files without losing much quality is to first use a program called ConvertXtoDVD which will create VIDEO_TS files for the .mkv file. Then use a program called CloneDVD to burn the VIDEO_TS files. This works pretty good. This can be done for free thanks to people posting these progams

Several of the comments here talk about burning AVI or MPG files to a DVD. If your DVD player is equipped to play DIVX files (it usually says so right on top of the machine, along with Dolby Digital, etc.), they you don´t need to convert them. A DIVX player will directly play AVI and MPG files without any conversion. Burn them onto your DVD as “data” files uing Nero of similar. Place the recorded data DVD into your DVD player. Hit the “menu” button and you´ll get a list of files that are playable. Almost all avi movies I have downloaded are wonderful picture quality which is not enhanced by using WinDVD or ConvertXto DVD. The sound is 5 channel as long as the original source was also. And the best part is that you can get 5 or 6 750kb movies onto ONE blank DVD. The quality is as good as a regular DVD except in action sequences when some pixaltion occurs. More frequently now, you find 1.5000kb files (twice as large). These play even better. There is no need to convert AVI or MPG files for playing on your DIVX player!

Does anyone know how to disable the subtitles when converting a .mkv file to .avi? I have anyconverter which works great except that I can’t choose to kill the subs.
