Get an iMac. Download Popcorn 3. Drag and drop the file and press record. Popcorn 3 will do the rest for you.

i’ve been using “AllToAVI” software and this one can convert .mkv files.. i’ve used this many times after downloading some anime series in .mkv format... just give it a try... just try searching google for this one its a freeware

TMPGenc is good... i used the Xpress program to convert the mkv to mpg and then burned that to DVD with nero :]

matroska is such a random file format to use :s

For all you noobs that want to burn an mkv file and keep the HD quality... spend $240 on a BluRay DVD burner for your PC, grab the readily available software, buy some BL-R DVDs at $15 a pop and burn away. Your never going to get HD video on a standard DVD. You can get 480p and when converted from 720p or 1081i looks damn good.

Orlando is right. The mkv format has several advantages over avi files. Groups that upload new movies releases in the mkv format can leave behind all the bagage about what language or audio track/format to include in their release. The mkv files has these. I love being able to grab a file, play it in HD on my PC and select which language to use or audio format.

Time for you all to upgrade... Just curious but why would you want to burn all these files anyway? Just get a nice plasma or LCD HDTV and locate your PC close. I play HD movies without issue directly to my 42” plasma from my PC. I use notebook type external drives to hold my data and pull them off line when full or not being used. BL-R discs are very expensive and pointless unless you plan to give away or sell pirated movies.

Ok I see that there are alot of ppl here who are asking how do you get an MKV to a avi to be converted
First look for a program called Free Video Converter V 1.1.0.0 download
It works for all kinds of videos
Its simple to use and easy to run even a noob can convert

i have this kodak easy share software that came with my camera/video recoder and it has a cd/dvd burner but i cannot play the dvd’s on my dvd..it only shows with realplayer..what do i do just learning to record for fun

Okay, to burn a mkv file you will have to download two free software’s. First is a softwere called Burn here.

Next you will need a conversion program called “ffmepgX” I think you can find it here:

Install both programs onto your Mac. You will have to get some additional files for the ffmepgX program but they tell you where to get them.

Now open the ffmepgX program and drag the mkv file to where it says “Drop Here”, under the summary tab. In the window to the right it will come up with a suggested conversion. Click and hold on that window and change it to “DVD mpeg2enc.

Now if there are subtitles that you want to be included, Click on the filters tab, and click on the VOB box. You will need to know what channel the subtitles are on, Usually on channel 2, so click where it says 0 and change it to the channel that the mkv has the subtitles on.

Leave the next box on “Burn” and it will burn the subtitles into the movie.

You can change the or alter almost anything in the movie with this program but this will get you started. Click “ENCODE” and wait for it to convert.

After conversion, you may have many files, but the one your interested in is the “ff.mpg” file. This file will usually not open with Quicktime. You can open and view it with VLC if you want.

Drop this file into the BURN program after you click the tab for video and DVD. It will tell you that it is not a compatible file and ask if you wish to convert it. Say yes and follow the instructions till it burns on a disk.
