I’m using Nero StartSmart to burn some .avi files onto a CD. But after I finish burning the .avi files, I try to open the files on the CD with DivX and there are folders named: CDI, EXT, MPEGAV and others. I can’t find the three .avi files that I burned, and I don’t know how to open it on DivX.

Windows Media Player immediately opens it when I tell it to open it from the CD drive on my computer, but the picture quality is really bad.

How do I jus straight out burn .avi files, keep the quality, and retain the ability to open it with DivX?

Thanks in advance for you help.

In fact you were working with Nero Vision Express or I hope so because the way you made your cd/dvd you may endup with a data file and the quality is very bad.So you have an avi file first try to watch it on pc.If is not working use any video analyser like GSpot or AviCodec and find out the type of avi you have and the players and codecs you may need to download.Once you can play the file ok sound and picture you know what is it, a Xvid a DivX a VOB and so on.Now you can go to the next step to convert it from Xvid to vcd/svcd or to DVD and make your choice. After convertion the file is ready to burn on cd/dvd and have to play ok on your standalone dvd player. If you don’t choose the right video system before convertion you may have problem to play it on your player. Not all of them are multisystem to play Pal/Secam/NTSC and not all of them play Xvid or DIvX and so on.Learn how to use the video analysers and download what you may need.Is good to have a codecs pack or a mega pack and also some players beside thew old Microsoft WMP.Here is a link to look for codecs and players and mega pack downloads:http://www.free-codecs.com/ Ace and K-Lite are mega packs All in One is a short version and the players to look for are VLC Video Lan, BSplayer,Xvid player,DivX player,The Core player all of them freeware.Just get it.

Thank you for your advice, but I’m having some problems understanding it.

The movies that I am trying to burn are playable already on my DivX Player. I couldn’t play it on my RealPlayer because the movie was something like a Div3 file or something. So I downloaded DivX and its codecs and now I can see the movie very well.

However, for archival purposes, I’m trying to burn the .avi file onto a regular CD, not a DVD (since I couldn’t burn .avi files on a DVD). I don’t want to watch the burned movie on my DVD player (the one I have attached to my TV) — I just want to keep the movie on a CD so I can delete the movie from my computer from my hardrive and free up some space. I’m planning on watching the movie on my CD on my computer, with my DivX Player.

I am getting .dat files.

What is vcd/svcd? And Xvid? I think that you’re saying that I need to convert my .avi files into a different file because my Nero won’t straight burn it as .avi and will end up as .dat. Am I right?

Thanks again for your help!!

Actually, never mind. I found out what I was doing wrong (which makes me feel incredibly stupid), and now, I’m fine. Gah, thanks, everyone.

Hey KAY,
What exactly did you do to burn your avi files to cd? I, too, want to just burn the video file to free up space on my computer. I did it once a long time ago so this is SO frustrating! I have Nero smart start, express and nero burning rom and I did it once, and I’m at a loss. I’ve tried to select different options (data file cd, video file cd, in Nero), but nothing is working. What did you do Kay, or anybody? Help! thanks for any info.

Kay,
Just an additional note to my below post. After I tried selecting several different options in Nero and actually burn. It says the burn is successful. But when I pop the cd into the tray, (which is E for me), the E is not coming up with the cd label/name and when I click it, it’s saying drive isn’t “ready”. When I put in the cd of avi video I made long ago, it registers right away, I can open it, and there are all the files I burned! Can’t seem to repeat the steps I used the do this once before. thanks.

Ah, hi, Donna.

Okay, I think I understand what you are trying to do. You´re just trying to burn the .avi data, right? Not convert it into a video file or anything since it messes up the quality and you can´t find it in your E drive.

I really couldn´t figure out how to burn it with Nero. Actually, I downloaded a different DVD burning program and used that to burn ONLY the data of the .avi files. So, I can open up my CD drive with DivX, click on an episode of Friends, let´s say, and watch it.

Try downloading this program, Click N´Burn CD DVD — it works really well for me. And you have the option to burn only the data of the .avi. But make sure you close the disc before burning since it´ll become a frisbee if you don´t. wink

The URL on CNET: http://www.download.com/Click-N-Burn-CD-DVD/3000-2646_4-10429997.html?tag=lst-0-1

I actually don´t know how you made it work before. My guess is that you clicked a special option for a data disc on Nero, but I´m really not sure...

Thanks for your reply, Kay. I did download that program. Burn stated successful. Unfortunately, the name does not show up on the E drive. Click on it and it still says 'device is not ready'. Wow, this is sooo frustrating. And also, not sure what you mean by the 'option to just burn data of the avi'. I just selected the avi video, it showed up on the bottom and I selected burn. I don’t see that option your speaking of. Can’t understand this. It’s a simple program and the burn stated successful. I know there is nothing wrong with the main E drive tray, because I can pop in an old burn I did and the files show up right away. ??? I’ll try more test burns...

If you’re just trying to burn a file to a CD, no matter what type of file it is, you don’t need to use Nero or anything else like that, because XP can do it for you (assuming you’re using XP). Just put a blank CD in the drive, copy & paste the file you want to burn to the CD, and click “Write these files to CD”. It’s that simple. If you have any problems then there is either a software or hardware problem with your CD drive.

KAY,
Just an update to my dilema. This is very odd to me. I have previously burned my AVI videos to a Memorex cd-rw. Label was printed 1x-4x. Cd was burned at 4x. I noticed that the new package of Memorex cd’s that I am using now (and having so much trouble showing up on my E drive) has a label that says 4x. Not 1x-4x, just 4x. Now, I wouldn’t think that would really matter, as I have always burned at 4x. Just for testing, I found an old Memorex cd, 1x-4x, and burned it. The burn was successful and the label showed right up on my E drive! Kind of strange. If one is burning at 4x, I don’t see there would be any difference between a 1x-4x cd and a 4x cd. Is it possible that the new 4x package of Memorex could be defective? My burning all states successful, but the E drive is not recognizing the cd. Could all this aggravation be because of a media issue? I will do further testing. Appreciate your input and patience. Comments?

Ah...I´m sorry, Donna. I´m really not sure on how to solve this problem. I don´t understand what you are trying to do. Are you trying to make the .avi files into DVD files so that you can watch it on your DVD or are you just trying to burn the .avi files onto a CD so you can watch it on a program like DivX only on your computer?

Kay,
I’m just trying to burn my avi video files onto cd, (not dvd) to free up space on my computer. Then I can delete them off my computer, but I would have the cd to access them as I need them. I have a video program that allows me to add music, combine videos, get creative with the videos, etc. That’s why I want to save to cd. I don’t want to play them on my dvd. Just want to store them on cd, so I can free up some much needed space. Anyway, when I started to burn some cd’s, that is when I realized my burned cd’s were not being recognized by my E drive. I burned with both my burning program and the one you suggested. Burn states successful. But as my previous post stated, I’m wondering if this is a media issue, as all the older avi files I burned are recognized by the E drive immediately.
