Greetings,

I have a Sony DVD+- DW-D56A... and I have been trying to figure out what DVD’s to use that will work with this player.

It can play movies, burn music as well as data to CD’s but it will Not recognize or burn on the DVD discs that I have used.

I have used Memorex and Fuji discs.
Recently I was told that only Sony discs work with a Sony DVD burner.

Before I make any more purchases I would like more suggestions on what to do.

Your Assistance is Appreciated...

I’ve read that the TDK brand of DVD media work well with the Sony DW-D56A.

Here’s the text to look for on the packaging...

TDK DVD RECORDABLE DVD-R 8X 4.7 GB 120 MIN DVD

The discs are silver in a “Cake Box” package. There are 50 discs per package.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Having a media problem is very much connected to your burner firmware, have to be updated for newer cd/dvd’s. Not working with DVD’s of any kind is a burner problem and you may need to contact the manufacturer for a warranty coverage. Updating a firmware is not an easy job and if you don’t do it right you may endup with a dead burner. As you can see here your burner is a rebadged LiteOn so check this link for any help. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=140594

Thank You All for your replies.

One minute the DVD reads and writes to a Sony DVD media, then the next minute it can not read it. What Drama!!!!

I went to the dell site and found that many people are having problems with this particular drive.
Looks like I will be replacing the drive.

Adding to the above list, Nexxtech DVD+R 4.7 GB is not recognized by the Sony DVD+- DW-D56A. I have been trying all the DVDs present in the Pack, none of them does work. I first thought that it was the problem with Nexxtech DVD, I asked my friend to write on it, it worked fine for him.

I tried writing in DYNEX DVD-R 16X/120/4.7 GB with the Sony. It worked fine for me.

Many updates for different dvd units have a
.exe package that will initiate a command
to update the bios of the player;
otherwise you may have to do this manually.
