DVD won't play correctly in stand alone player

I’ve been trying to get an avi movie off my computer to play on a DVD. I converted the avi to mpeg using the Cucusoft converter. After that I converted them to VOB files. Then I burned the vob files to a DVD using Nero. I first tried using TDK DVD+R/RW and those did not work. they played pixilated and it froze a lot.. A friend had given me a burned DVD that was a Fuji Film DVD-R and it plays fine in my dvd player. I went out and bought the same kind went ahead and burned the vob files to the new dvds and they still play pixilated and freeze all the time. The burner I am using is the NEC DVD-RW ND-2500. I updated the firmware from 1.06 to 1.09 and still the same problems. I updated Nero and still the same problems. I’ve tried burning at lower speeds and burning while in safemode but nothing works. Anyone have any idea of what I can do to fix this problem?
