do i need to convert a file (.avi, .mpg, ....) to burn it to a dvd file? (yes im an uber noob)

ya im curious if i need to get a file converter to burn an avi or mpg or divx or whatever to burn it to a dvd

DVD format is VOB, you have to convert your video to DVD compatible video at first, otherwise standard DVD player can not read and play it.
