Xvid and DivX are the best codecs for compression when ripping from a DVD source. Their output file sizes range between 700MB and 1GB making them ideal for downloading from P2P networks. They are pretty easy to convert to either (S)VCD or DVD.

As for your 2nd question, you’re probably using a program that’s shareware and leaves a logo or watermark until you pay for the full version. I’ve never had something like that happen to me; so you might be using the wrong programs.

1. Because it offers good compression. Would you rather download a 700 MB xvid or divx movie, or a 4.7 GB mpeg-2 vob?
2. Are you using a trial version of your dvd converter? If that’s the case the watermark won’t be removed unless you pay. (you’ll still have to redo the dvd after that) If the 'text' you’re talking about is just the divx logo at the bottom, go to your start menu and find the divx decoder configuration utility. There should be a box that lets you show/hide the divx logo. Once you set that future conversions won’t have the logo anymore.

Xvid to DVD... any good programs out there? I believe that one needs to decode audio and video with 2 different applications?
so any one that can steer me in the direction of a good guide and program to do this with. I have used TPMGenc Plus 2.5 but the result was an unrecognisable file buy windows?

Try an all-in-one program like Avi2Dvd or DVD2SVCD. They both convert .avi files to (S)VCD and DVD.
