i tried to play a mp4 file with windows media player. the player plays the movie but there is no sound. the player asks for samr codec.
which codec is required to be installed.

The SAMR codec plays in Quicktime movie player only.

convert the file to avi and it converts with the sound and all smiley

i used this btw Xilisoft 3GP Video Converter Wizard 3

This is kind of late, but here it goes anyway...
These are most likely 3gp files (renamed mp4 for marketing reasons*). Generally, renaming the file extension to 3gp should resolve the problem.

* The 3gp format was derived from the mp4 format, so they’re fairly closely related (and mp4 is itself derived from mov (quicktime)).

Perfect! Renamed my file from mp4 to 3gp and it plays allright. Stupid marketing bastards ;p.

well your discussion helped me alot i changed the file format but there is still a problem. audio is fine but picture is dark and blurred....

What a wasting my time to download lots of player & codec just to solve this problem...

change *.mp4 to *.3gp (video taken from phone..)

I’ve renamed .mp4 to .3gp but the problem still remain the same : no aoudio codec for samr. Any ideas ?

Changing the file extension didin’t work for meeither. But then i found out that these files can perfectly be played using Apple QuickTime.

My friends. The same thing. I had the same problem... not been able to listen the sound of the video file with .mp4 extension, I was just able to watch the video without sound. And after rename the file extension to .3gp it works great
