The Tag 85 install didn’t work for me. I have now installed “ffdshow-20050303-se” only to have another problem on my hands. The video for the file I’m trying to open no longer works. The error I’m getting is:
The video file you are opening includes video that is not recognized by the DivX Player.
The file contains the following type of data:

Video data: FOURCC code “XVID”

You may need to install a new video codec on your computer to watch.

However I do have XVID on my computer. Just today I reinstalled it, so all should be good.
Can someone please help me out here?
Thanks very much.

Yay I got it working. While the file doesn’t work in the DivX player, it works fine with Windows Media. I took a chance after re-downloading the XVID codec and it worked.

After trying to play a .avi file in DivX only to be told I needed to get this tag, I did so. It still didn’t work. I then tried this FFDShow, and I got the same message as Steven did. Because it’s in .avi format, it won’t play in Windows Media Player. Can anyone help?

I have had the same trouble with movies not having any sound. The strange thing is these movis played fine when I first downloaded them. I saved them on a data disk and I have used them several times. Two days ago I tried to play them and the video was there but no sound. I was given the answere that I was missing the tag 85 codec. I have not changed anything on my computer so I can’t see why I was missing this codec. So I downloaded the codec and everything is fine now. So If you are missing the sound on your video’s Go to www.freecodecs.com and down load ffdshow-2005303-sse and good luck.

I am using Windows 98 and Windows 2000. I downloaded the Fraunhofer MPEG codec, and my AVI played just fine in Windows 2000 with Windows Media Player 9. I have tried to install the Fraunhofer codec on Windows 98, but the file does not play in either Windows Media Player 7.1 or DivX. I have also tried numerous codec packs, but nothing works. When I use REGSVR32 to register L3CODECX.AX, I get an error message. It succeded once, but I still get errors in WMP 7.1 and DivX. Since I am using Win98 Standard, I cannot use WMP 9. Please, any advice would be appreciated! smiley
