Thanks guys as you’ve helped solve my problems.
By the way there is a bundle of codecs for XP-Users in Codec-Download.com under Audio Codecs and XP Codec Pack.
Happy listening.

If you are having trouble hearing dialogue in some of your movies, but everything else sounds and looks perfectly, then this may be the solution for you. I can play 99% of all movies perfectly with the following setup:

1) Download and install the latest version of ffdshow.

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ffdshow/ffdshow-20041012-sse2.exe?download

2) Download and install this AC3 codec from sourceforge as well.

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ac3filter/ac3filter_0_70b.exe?download

3) Now, since ffdshow includes the codec you just downloaded in step 2, you need to disable it in ffdshow. To disable the AC3 codec in ffdshow do this:

a) go to start/program/ffdshow/audio filter configuration
b) in the audio configuration panel, select codecs on the left. Now in the right side of the window should be all of the codecs
c) select the decoder for the AC3 format, which should be liba52. By clicking on the decoder for the AC3 format, a drop down list should appear. Select disable from the drop down list and then click ok.

4) Now you need to run the AC3 filter config program and configure it so you can hear it. To do this go to: start/programs/ac3filter/ac3filter config

a)in the main tab of the ac3filter config, move the gain level to its highest level, select OK.

You should be able to play 99% of all movies perfectly with this setup. Enjoy!
