I opened the .mp3 file in iTunes instead and it worked perfectly.
I have the same problem, on Vista using WMP 11. I’ve had quite a lot of problems with Vista and Codecs! ![]()
So .... it appears that Vista will not some files due to this missing Codec Microsoft MPEG-1 (50)
Aside from all the requests...and complaints IS THERE OR IS THERE NOT AN ANSWER????
I have the same problem when use Window Vista and WMP 11.
filed failed with WMP, tried it in VideoLanPlayer, iTunes and Winamp and it works fine. renaming it to mp2 doesnt work for me either
khoanguyen’s Vista codec Package may work for you, but I had no such luck:
20,679 KB bundled video/audio filters and codecs
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Vista_Codec_Package/1159994557/1
But I recommend a smaller and more direct filter:
2,744 KB bundled audio filters and codecs

btw
VLC player

iTunes

Winamp

Yeah, everyone up there, i had the same prob, play in itunes or real player, im on vista if it helps...
same to me: I have Vista (ultimate x86) and WMP 11.
Renaming file to *.mp2 worked. But I also have Vista Codec Package installed.
Quote #19.. Which vista codec package did you use? I counted 3 packages. I would greatly appreciate it!
I hope I can help you with this solution :
you can edit the mp3 file with some free software as Audacity (available here : http://audacity.sourceforge.net/?lang=en). Then you only have to re-save it (under another name to avoid confusion).
Warning, Audacity requires a DLL file to save the mp3 file : lame-enc.dll, you can download it here :
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?lame_enc
Then there’s no more problem with WMP 11...
thanks

I encoded an mp3 using Audacity with Lame 3.97, then edited and re-encoded it accidentally using Lame 3.96 which caused the error.
When I got the MPEG-1 Layer 3 (50) error on a group of 16 mp3 files, I did the following:
1. Used a program called Total Audio Converter and converted them all to WMA files.
2. Then I used the same program to convert them back
to mp3 files.
They now all played without a problem on my Vista computer.
heyyyy khoanguyen!! thanks a bunch
helped alot and i can finally play the song! ![]()

Codec is missing
Windows Media Player cannot play the file (or cannot play either the audio or video portion of the file) because the Microsoft MPEG-1 (50) codec is not installed on your computer.
I am having a lot if trouble locating this...if anyone has any advice, it would be greatly appreciated...Thanks
hi, i have meet the same stutation, and i found a solution. I downloaded “vista codec packages”. Link here : http://fileforum.betanews.com/browse/Multimedia&Graphics/Video/Codecs
Hope that it can help you.
tks for this useful info. the pack is downloading and check it is functional or not later. anyhow, tks
I had the same issue and opened the file in itunes. It plays fine.
1.Import it into itunes
2.Even though its .mp3 convert it to an .mp3 again by itunes
3.Then it will play in windows media player
or you could just use itunes which is better anyway!
