inherited hardware

I have inherited a pc with 'audio codecs' in the device manager list.........
When I got it - it played cd’s ok.....but now won’t - no sound on anything. Ihave checked all I can and no joy.
Any suggestions as I have no drivers - and cannot see where any numbers are either.
