I have several .avi files that play just fine in DivX player or Windows Media player, but when I open them up in VirtualDub I can neither play, nor convert the files.

The error presented is:
No audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format.

And here is the file info:
Video stream
...
Decompressor: XviD MPEG-4 Codec
...
Audio stream
Sampling rate: 48000Hz
Channels: 2(Stereo)
Sample precision: N/A
Compression: Unknown (tag 0055)
Layout: 233 chunks(0.00 preload)
Length: 38366040 samples (39:57:87)
Min/avg/max/total frame size: 96/336/576 (77K)
Data rate: 128kbps (6.66% overhead)

I have read lots of posts that recommend installing various codecs. No luck thus far. The part that confuses me is that I can play the file just fine, so it would seem I have the required codec. I need to be able to use VirtualDub as part of a process I use to convert to DVD video.

Any help would be appreciated.

Vdub uses what’s known as dmo filters only, not the directx ones. You could try vdubmod, or if the file is an ac-3 file, then load the ac3acm filter. Google it.

luck.
