First you need to set Windows Vista to show file extensions.
1. Click Computer in the Start menu.
2. Press the Alt key on the right side of your keyboard.
3. A hidden menu will appear in the Computer window. Click Tools and then click Folder Options.
4. Click the View tab.
5. Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types.
Then Right Click on the file and change the file extension to .ASX with the Rename option. This makes the file play properly.
This file renaming then even allows Real Player to play the movie files.
What the heck is the deal with this Microsoft ADPCM Format (2)codec problem with Windows vista??
If it is a Microsoft product (the codec), why isn’t it available on Microsoft’s site??
I’ve had other issues with Vista’s version of MediaPlayer, & I’m getting a little tired of it. It seems it’s “too new” to be compatable with some (or a lot?) of media files!
And then, Microsoft tells you that the codec is available somewhere out on the internet, go find it...
What a golden opportunity for virus writers! Microsoft will not even tell you a “safe” place to download this.
Apparently Microsoft figures it’s worth it to loose access to some of your media, in return for their “better” media player??
Marco, from the year 2004 to the year 2009... ur solution still works...
So, u r the king!!
HAIL MARCO!!! ;-)
my media player isn’t playing videos...saying codec needed and can’t find it on web. can u plz help me to find it?? windows vista....
Try this if you have Vista!
OPTION #2
*Re-name the file extension: “.ASF” to “.ASX”
1. Open a folder or open explorer
2. Click the “Organize” button (to the left of the Views button)
3. Click “Folder and Search Options”
4. Click the “View” tab
5. Uncheck “Hide extensions for known file types”
6. Click OK
You are now able to rename your file extensions:
Example: “CLIP0001.ASF” to “CLIP0001.ASX”
Re-naming your Aiptek .ASF files to .ASX will allow:
*Windows Media player to playback your Aiptek videos*
It does work, you just have to make sure you are changing the extension and not just renaming the file. If you’re doing it right, Vista will warn you that the file may become unstable. By default it hides the extensions so you can’t see them and what you may do is end up changing CLIP.ASF to CLIP.ASX.ASF. Make sure you can see the extensions before you try renaming. Here’s the instructions from Aiptek. Just did this on my vids and it worked like a charm.

so it doesn’t work on Windows Vista, huh?
Hey guys.
If you want to replay your videos, copy the .ASF files into Windows Photo Gallery and they play just fine.
I also had the Microsoft ADPCM Format 2 problem when trying to play my movies in Windows Media Player.
I appears that all of my videos now work no problem. :]
thanks!! really you have saved my life!!
I had by accident replaced my MSADP32.ACM file and IMAADP32.ACM file located in C:\WINDOWS\System32 (I’m using XP) with older versions.
Thanks to Moscow_al’s comment I found copies of the newer versions in C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$
Hi
I cannot find Standard system devices in the add hardware wizard in 2008 server.
Thank you so much!
Million thanks from Australia!
Thank you, worked flawlessly!
Thanx also from Romania Marco. I can also say that this was the main reason for I couldn’t hear the movies made with VADO HD camera. So who has audio problems with VADO HD, this is the solution. And it works.
